  9. Will you pick up my yard & garden waste if I put it at the curb with the rest of my garbage?

Question: There are two houses on my property but your driver only took one garbage can and left me a note about the other. Why?

Answer:

Unless you (or your landlord) pay garbage tax for both houses, you are entitled to only one can/bag per week and must purchase tags for each additional can/bag. This also applies to unregistered secondary suites. Check with our office or the municipality in which you live to determine if you second dwelling is an eligible residence.

Question: What time will my garbage be picked up?

Answer:

It’s best not to rely on the truck being at your house at any particular time because many factors (e.g. road, weather or traffic conditions, reassignment of drivers) can affect the driver’s progress.

The ONLY way to ensure that your garbage is picked-up is to have it at the curb by 8:00 a.m.

Question: Next week my garbage day will fall on a statutory holiday. Will my collection day change?

Answer:

No. We collect garbage on ALL statutory holidays except Christmas Day and Boxing Day. If your collection day coincides with Christmas or Boxing Day, you are allowed to put two cans out on your collection day the following week. Often there is less garbage out on statutory holidays and our trucks are able to complete their routes more quickly so don’t be surprised if we get to your house earlier than usual.

Question: How can I reach the Sechelt Landfill? I can’t find their number in the book.

Answer:

The Sechelt Landfill site, located on Dusty Road in Sechelt is operated by the SCRD. They can be reached at 604-885-6889.
Their operating hours are: Tuesday to Saturday 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Sunday 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Check their website (http://www.scrd.ca) for further information.

Question: What items should NOT be put in my household trash?

Answer:

The SCRD specifies that:

Acceptable garbage includes:

• municipal solid waste of a non-toxic nature
• garbage generated by a residential premise from normal household use
• capable of being contained in a 77 liter garbage can

Unacceptable garbage includes:

• garden waste, brush & land clearing debris
• construction/demolition waste of any kind
• free liquids of any kind
• needles & syringes
• commercial, industrial, institutional waste
• hazardous, explosive, chemical waste
• hot or burning material
• waste oil
• paint
• lead acid batteries, car parts

Question: Where can I get a bear-proof garbage residential garbage can?

Answer:

We are not aware of any product that is actually bear proof but local hardware stores sell garbage cans that are bear resistant. Just be sure that you don’t buy one that is larger than 77 liters.

Check out the Bear Aware website (http://www.bearaware.bc.ca) for further information regarding this issue.

Question: I have one of your metal containers at my place of business. A bear keeps tearing off the plastic lids. How can I deal with this?

Answer:

Depending on the size and shape of your container, we may be able to make some modifications which would consist of replacing the plastic lids with metal ones and attaching chains to prevent the bear from opening them.

Question: I’m about to replace my roof. What size of a container do I need?

Answer:

We can supply a 6, 20 or 40 cubic yard container, depending on the amount of roofing you’ll be removing. Roofs are measured in 100 sq. ft. sections called “squares”. With a single layered shingle roof, you can fit 4 squares into 1 cubic yard.

A 40 cubic yard container should be used for cedar shakes because of their larger volume. Because of the excessive weight, containers should be filled only 2/3 full of tar & gravel roofing.

Question: Will you pick up my yard & garden waste if I put it at the curb with the rest of my garbage?

Answer:

We pick up lawn clippings ONLY. They must be in a separate bag which weighs less than 22.5 kgs or 50 pounds and a tag must be purchased if it is an additional bag. All other residential yard and garden waste such as weeds, soil or prunnings is accepted at no charge at the Town of Gibsons’ Green Waste drop-off depot @ 915 Henry Road or the Sechelt landfill site
